New ground was broken in North Saanich today as local politicians and representatives from the Victoria Airport Authority took shovel to dirt to commence a $24-million highway interchange project.
Gary Lunn, Saanich-Gulf Islands MP and minister of state for sport, with the Murray Coell, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands and minister of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development and, joined Victoria Airport Authority President and CEO Richard Paquette at the official interchange groundbreaking at McTavish Road and Patricia Bay Highway 17.
The region’s largest project is scheduled to be completed by March 2011.
Traffic pattern changes will be minimal during construction with the only full closures being to McTavish Road between the highway and Lochside Drive, and Canora Road between McTavish and Rideau Avenue.
Vehicle traffic to the airport will take McTavish to East Saanich Road and then to Canora, which leads to the airport; during work, highway traffic trying to access Lochside Drive will do so at Mount Newton Cross Road or Amity Drive. A temporary traffic light will be set up at East Saanich Road and McTavish to improve flow for the increased traffic.
