Greater Victoria a test site for transit stops

B.C. Transit is using Greater Victoria to unveil its latest bus stop designs and colours.

The Sooke Park-and-Ride shelters will feature the organization's green, blue and white colour scheme by mid-December. New stops will be in place along Bay Street by Dec. 28 and will follow on the new No. 15 route, between downtown Victoria and the University of Victoria.

The fresh colour scheme is already on Transit's newest buses. The corporation's previous colours were red, white and blue.

A request for proposals by B.C. Transit calls for a five-year contract to design and supply the five types of transit stops in the province. New stops will vary from a single post to large stations and be installed and upgraded as necessary.

The current replacement plans call for more than 1,200 new stops by 2014. Some will have remote cameras.

Final cost estimates are not yet known.

B.C. Transit is also asking for designs incorporating wood to tie in with the province's policy to promote forestry products.

Greater Victoria is one of 50 communities in the province served by B.C. Transit. Passengers catch about 50 million rides annually.

About 500 of the 2,156 stops in Greater Victoria will get the new look.
