A would-be car thief got away empty handed Friday evening after trying to steal a womans car, but failed to start the engine.
The man tried to carjack the vehicle, throwing the woman driver to the ground after she parked the car downtown around 6:30 p.m. and was trying to exit the vehicle.
The Victoria senior was shaken by the incident, but not injured. She had parked on the west side of Vancouver Street between Johnson Street and Pandora Avenue and was just opening her door when the man pulled her from the car and threw her to the ground.
After failing to start the car, the suspect ran away. The man is described as a white or possibly First Nations man, between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-11-inches tall with dark eyes and short cropped hair.
At the time of the attempted carjacking, he was wearing a grey toque, a black leather jacket over a black sweatshirt and gray pants.
Police are asking anyone with information about the attempted carjacking to contact the non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
