Vancouver is considering a year-long pilot project to determine whether taxis are able to share the city's bus lanes without disrupting transit.
The project, which will go to council for a vote next week, would allow taxis to travel - but not stop - in the city's four bus/bicycle lanes on Pender, Burrard, Granville and Broadway, and the HOV/bus/bicycle lane on Georgia Street.
Vancouver Coun. Geoff Meggs, who put the resolution forward, said the move has long been pushed by the taxi industry, "because often they have clients from other cities who don't understand why they're sitting in traffic when there's an empty lane next to them.
"If taxis are able to travel more quickly, they can pick up more people."
