One man and two women were injured in a fiery single-vehicle crash near Youbou Monday night.
Lake Cowichan Fire Chief Doug Knott said the vehicle rolled over and caught fire in the ditch about 7:30 p.m. on Youbou Highway about nine kilometres east of Youbou.
Knott said the three occupants were out of the vehicle when fire crews arrived.
All three were taken to hospital by ambulance, but the nature and extent of their injuries is unclear.
The vehicle fire spread to the nearby timber, but firefighters were able to quickly bring the blaze under control, Knott said.
Youbou resident Dirk Meissner said the crash closed the highway for about five hours while police investigated.
Meissner said he and other town residents, who got caught on the wrong side of the crash, parked their vehicles on the roadside and hiked down an old rail spur to get around the crash. They were picked up on the other side by community members and driven into Youbou.
