A 17-year-old youth who stepped in to stop an argument outside a Saanich house party ended up with a 20-centimetre gash on his face and ear.
Saanich police were called just before midnight Thursday to a house on Santa Clara Avenue, where between 25 and 30 youths had been celebrating a birthday. When a few of the guests began to get unruly, the parents in the home stepped in and called the party off.
The 17-year-old was slashed with a hunting-knife after intervening in an argument between a male and a female outside the house. The suspect fled but was soon tracked down by police.
Multiple layers of stitches were needed to close the wound. Because of the severity of the injuries, detectives were called almost immediately and began their investigation at 1 a.m. Friday.
A 16-year-old youth was taken into custody. Charges being considered include aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.
