A Saanich man was injured and pepper-sprayed trying to stop a robbery at his home Tuesday night.
Around 2 a.m., the 62-year-old resident was aroused by an outdoor alarm set off at his home in the 1900-block of Watson Street, near Camosun College.
The homeowner went to the carport to see what was happening and saw someone he didnt know moving inside his vehicle, said Staff Sgt. Scott Treble from Saanich police. He confronted the man and they got into a struggle.
The homeowner then went inside to grab pepper spray and chased after the intruder who tried to flee.
Down the block, the two men got into another melee. The homeowner was pepper-sprayed in the struggle and scuffed his hands. The suspect ran away.
Saanich, Oak Bay and Victoria police joined forces to search for the suspect in surrounding areas.
Around 4 a.m. a man who matched the suspects description and had a prolific history of property crime convictions was arrested at Fort Street and Oak Bay Avenue, said Treble.
The 42-year-old Victoria man is in Saanich police custody. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
