A propane gas leak prompted an evacuation on the Colwood side of CFB Esquimalt on Tuesday.
The gas leak was detected through routine maintenance at 3: 30 p.m., said Capt. Jenn Jackson, the base public affairs officer.
Colwood firefighters arrived and called in reinforcements from around the region, Jackson said.
The evacuation covered an area of a kilometre around the gas tank, she said. No residences were affected.
The tank holds 65,000 litres when full, and it was half full when the leak is believed to have started.
The gas is liquid inside the tank but is leaking in vapour form, Jackson said.
Fire crews and regional hazardous-materials experts were on scene Tuesday evening.
The leak was patched and gas trucks were called in to remove the remaining gas.
