Veteran Nova Scotia Liberal Wayne Gaudet won't run in next provincial election

HALIFAX - A veteran Nova Scotia Liberal says he won't run in the next provincial election after serving 20 years in the legislature.

Wayne Gaudet says he will step down as the member for the riding of Clare when the next election is called.

Gaudet says he is stepping down after his riding was eliminated in an electoral boundaries reorganization passed at the end of the fall session of the legislature.

A former school administrator, Gaudet was first elected in 1993 and was re-elected five times.

He served in a variety of cabinet posts including Education, Agriculture and Acadian Affairs.

He is also a former Speaker of the legislature and was interim leader of the provincial Liberals on two occasions.
