Toronto District School Board votes to accept financial help from province

TORONTO - The Toronto District School Board will take Education Minister Laurel Broten‘s offer to send a special team in to help with their finances.

Trustees voted 13-7 Wednesday night in favour of the proposal.

The board‘s education director, Chris Spence, says having another set of eyes look at what the board is doing and where it‘s headed would be helpful.

The team will give the board advice on how to implement recommendations of a Pricewaterhouse Coopers report into the TDSB's finances.

That report called for closing up to 15 schools and the layoff of some 700 staff.

Board trustee Howard Goodman blasted the Pricewaterhouse Coopers report as deeply flawed, saying Broten‘s solution won't give the board the help it needs.

The TDSB is the largest school board in Canada with nearly 600 schools serving more than 250,000 students. (CFRB)
