Manitoba government hopes campaign will bolster student school attendance

The Canadian Press / Times Colonist

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba government says it is working to improve regular attendance by students in the province's schools.

The department is promoting a strategy developed by parent councils called Everybody in School Every Day.

It includes videos, posters and pamphlets that are aimed at parents and students about the value of an education.

An internal study by Manitoba Education in 2009 into the truancy problem said students in the province regularly skip school.

The reasons for skipping included students caring for young children, holding jobs or taking trips with their parents.

The province commissioned that study to explore ways to improve high school graduation rates.
