Elementary teachers' union targets more school boards for one-day strikes

TORONTO - The union representing public elementary teachers in Ontario has named its next targets for one-day strikes.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario says teachers in the Bluewater, Algoma, Halton school boards will be off the job Wednesday.

Walkouts will take place Monday in the Hamilton area and three school boards in northern Ontario.

On Tuesday, the strikes will move to Toronto and seven other boards.

On Thursday, elementary teachers with the Thames Valley school board will stage a one-day walkout. The board covers Elgin, Middlesex and Oxford counties and includes London, Woodstock and St. Thomas.

The walkouts are in protest of a controversial law that allows the government to stop strikes, freeze wages and cut benefits.

Premier Dalton McGuinty has said the government would allow the one-day strikes as long as they don‘t extend beyond that.
