HALIFAX - Eight men left stranded in Halifax after their decrepit tugboat was deemed a safety risk are scheduled to return to their homes in Central America on Monday thanks to donations raised by a local group.
Helen Glenn, manager of he Mission to Seafarers, says the charity raised about $7,000 in cash and has enough airline points to fly the men to Honduras and El Salvador.
The crew has been living aboard the ragged, 68-year-old vessel since Dec. 18 when it sailed into Halifax harbour to escape a winter gale.
Transport Canada detained it, citing concerns over its safety.
Meanwhile, the owner of the tug — New Jersey-based Vesta Shipping — says the men should fix the vessel instead of appealing to the public for help.
