A Nanaimo woman has been given a $109 ticket after her car was struck by a train on Tuesday. The 47-year-old was taken to hospital with bruises after her Honda was struck by a southbound train at the intersection of Waddington Road and the Island Highway in Nanaimo on Tuesday.

Police issued the woman the ticket for failing to stop at a railroad crossing.

"The train was traveling at approximately 40 km/h and pushed the car along the tracks for approximately 35 meters before it was able to stop," said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O'Brien. "Investigators were able to determine the lights on the train were functioning at the time, the siren was activated as were the crossing bells. The intersection, however, has no crossing arm."

Pieces of the car had been visible scattered throughout the scene near the tracks and along Waddington Road, including panels from the front and rear bumpers.

The driver was the only occupant of the car and had been headed north along the highway. She turned left onto Waddington road and was struck by the train on the passenger side of her vehicle.
