Victoria will break ground Monday on a new protected two-way bike lane on Fort Street.

Brunnell Construction, the Vancouver Island-based company that built a similar lane on Pandora Avenue, has been awarded the $2.8-million contract.

The lane will be built on the north side of Fort Street between Wharf and Cook streets. Construction is expected to be completed by May 2018.

Cyclists will be separated from motor vehicle traffic using a combination of paint and bollards, parked vehicles and concrete barriers.

The design maintains standard right-hand turns and left-hand turn signals.

There will be dedicated traffic signals for cyclists.

Construction will begin with utility upgrades along the route.

Work will be limited in November and December to accommodate the holiday shopping season.

There will be temporary changes to bus stop locations and on-street parking, as well as reduced travel lanes at some points. Pedestrians might be temporarily re-routed while sidewalks are replaced.

The city’s first two-way separated bicycling corridor on Pandora Avenue between Cook and Store streets, built at a cost of $3.4 million, opened in May.
