An elderly woman was taken to hospital Sunday when a fire broke out in her apartment at 4490 Chatterton Way in Saanich.

An elderly Saanich woman was taken to hospital with burns and smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in her third-floor apartment at 4490 Chatterton Way at about noon Sunday.

The fire, which started in the bedroom, was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system prior to the arrival of the Saanich Fire Department, said Battallion Chief Joe Zsidi.

Firefighters from two Saanich fire halls converged on the site and rescued the woman; an ambulance transported her to hospital, he said.

Residents of the 50-suite building were evacuated. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental but its cause is under investigation, said Zsidi.

Fire damage was contained to the woman’s suite but there was water damage in the tenant’s suite and in the suite below. Those tenants are under the care of emergency social services, said Zsidi.

Another fire that broke out early Saturday at a fish and chips shop in the 3900-block of Shelbourne Street also is under investigation. Damage at that blaze is estimated at $50,000.
