Victoria police officers investigate outside the Fairmont Empress hotel after a 73-year-old woman was struck while crossing Government Street about 4 p.m. Thursday. (Jan. 24, 2013)

A 73-year-old Victoria woman in a downtown crosswalk was thrown about 12 metres after she was struck by a car Thursday afternoon.

The woman was in a crosswalk, crossing Government Street from in front of the Fairmont Empress Hotel to the Causeway about 4 p.m.

Another driver in the curb lane stopped for the woman but the driver in the centre lane apparently didn’t see the pedestrian and struck her, said Victoria police Staff Sgt. Kerry Panton. That driver then stopped.

The woman was conscious after being hit and was able to speak at the hospital. “She has injuries to her upper body and probably head injuries,” he said.

Panton said the driver who hit the woman was likely travelling under the 50 km/h speed limit at the time.
