South Island Resource Management issued a statement Tuesday assuring the public that work going on at its Stebbings Road site in the Shawnigan area is not contrary to a Monday court decision.

The B.C. Supreme Court decision said that a contaminated-soil facility at the site contravenes a Cowichan Valley Regional District zoning bylaw. The activity on Stebbings Road, including the coming and going of trucks, is part of a project to transport non-contaminated aggregate, the statement said.

Opponents of the contaminated-soil facility cheered the court decision. They have expressed fear that the facility could threaten drinking water coming from Shawnigan Lake.
