Highway 4 linking Tofino and Ucluelet to Port Alberni reopened to two-way traffic Friday afternoon after being rebuilt following a washout.

A landslide caused the road five kilometres east of the Ucluelet junction, toward Port Alberni, to collapse. As road crews worked to fix the road, it was reduced to single-lane alternating traffic.

The road was reconstructed using gravel and an asphalt overlay, B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation said. Crews are installing perforated drain pipe and improving ditches above the site to control drainage.

The local maintenance contractor, Emcon Services Inc., with Gibson Bros. Contracting, is carrying out the job and will be back next summer to add another layer of asphalt.

The road was closed in both directions after a washout in roughly the same area on Dec. 2. It was repaired and reopened, but washed out again last weekend.
