Update

Damian Kowalewich has won the View Royal council byelection.

More to come

View Royal residents go to the polls today in a byelection to choose a councillor to replace Heidi Rast, who has taken a job in Prince Edward Island.

Vying for the council role are Mark Brennan, Nathan Daisley, Adam Flint, Angela Hanes, Damian Kowalewich and Jodi Zwicker.

The winner will hold a council seat until October 2018, when the next B.C. municipal elections take place.

Voting is being held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at View Royal Elementary School, 218 Helmcken Rd.

View Royal Mayor David Screech has said he is hopeful that voter turnout will exceed that seen recently in a Saanich byelection, which had 11.4 cent of eligible voters cast ballots, and Vancouver, where under 11 per cent took part. Screech said issues in the community of about 10,800 have included the future of the Choices transitional homeless shelter and transportation matters.
