The Rifflandia music festival, which has quickly grown into a stadium-size event from modest beginnings in 2008, revealed a celebrity name Friday in its final round of artist announcements: Courtney Love.
Rifflandia’s sixth outing, scheduled for Sept. 12-15, will roll out about 200 acts on stages around Victoria, including Royal Athletic Park. It was repeatedly packed with thousands of music fans for last year’s shows.
Love, widow of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, is headlining the festival’s opening night at Royal Athletic Park in what will be her first Victoria performance. The former Hole frontwoman played Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom in July to rave reviews.
Love, 49, has been active on numerous fronts of late, including writing her memoir. Based in New York City since 2009, she is also mulling a return to her native California for acting opportunities. Love’s performance in The People vs. Larry Flynt netted her a Golden Globe nomination in 1996.
A list of rappers, including Danny Brown, Action Bronson, Classified, Bliss N Eso and Watsky, in addition to rock acts Limblifter and Humans, were also confirmed Friday. Local acts were also named to the bill, including Current Swell, Hrdvsion, Bloody Wilma and Georgia Murray.
The full festival schedule is available at Rifflandia.com.
Tickets go on sale Aug. 16 at 9:30 a.m. The festival’s new headquarters, at Pandora Avenue and Douglas Street, will open its doors for the first time that morning.
Tickets range from $40 for a single-night pass to $295 for the full VIP treatment. They are available in person beginning next week at Lyle’s Place, Ditch Records, the Royal and McPherson box office, Rifflandia headquarters or online at rmts.bc.ca.
