Technology and some common-sense sleuthing led Victoria police to $4,000 worth of stolen photography equipment on Tuesday, along with irreplaceable wedding and engagement pictures.

An 18-year-old Saanich youth was arrested.

The incident began with police being called to Gonzales Beach about 6:45 p.m. after a man discovered the equipment was missing.

Luckily, his iPhone was with the stolen items and had the “Find my iPhone” app installed, so the equipment could be tracked.

He and two officers followed the high-tech signal to the vicinity of Douglas and View streets, but there were too many people around to zero in on a suspect.

Led by the app, they headed toward a group of people watching a street performance.

When there was a break in the show, the officers had the victim activate the high-tech locator.

The tell-tale high-pitched sound that followed indicated the iPhone was nearby.

Someone in the crowd was seen opening a bag to check the noise, and he was promptly taken into custody.
