Victoria police have seized a quarter-kilogram of fentanyl — enough to kill thousands of people, police say.

Two men were arrested Nov. 30 after a weeks-long investigation by Victoria police.

Police said the men have gang affiliations and were en route to Victoria after taking a ferry from the Lower Mainland.

Officers seized 250 grams of fentanyl and 100 grams of cocaine. It’s believed the drugs were destined for downtown Victoria.

Police said Friday that the two men remain in custody and are facing charges of drug-trafficking.

Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, has been detected in about 83 per cent of illicit drug overdose deaths in B.C. this year, according to the B.C. Coroners Service.
