Victoria police officers honoured

Victoria police Sgt. Mike Johnston is receiving his second Medal of Bravery in a ceremony at Rideau Hall today.

Johnston, Sgt. Mike Brown and Const. Steve Kowan — all members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team — along with Const. Ken Ramsay are being honoured for their actions during a June 15, 2011, incident in which they searched for possible victims in a Carroll Street basement suite that had been booby-trapped to keep intruders away.

All of the men volunteered to enter the suite despite knowing about the danger inside.

A search of the residence turned up crystal meth and heroin, along with thousands of dollars worth of stolen goods.

Johnston’s previous medal came in 2010 after an incident near Hillside Avenue and Blackwood Street in which officers fatally shot a man who tried to ram through a roadblock after a car chase. — Times Colonist
