Victoria police confused by similar-looking California fugitives arrested

Sandra McCulloch / Times Colonist

On March 2 two rather similar-looking California fugitives were caught. Dustin Ilar and Daniel Mota were hiding out in Esquimalt, having illegally made their way into Canada after warrants were issued for their arrest in California.

Two men who share similar tattoos, ethnicity, hairstyle and weight, and who are both wanted on warrants in California were arrested by Victoria police last week.

Authorities in California contacted police here about Dustin Ilar, who is a high risk to offend due to his extensive robbery and firearms history.

But things got slightly confusing when police believed Ilar was using the alias of Daniel Mota, who is also wanted in California for parole revocation and illegal entry into Canada.

Then it appeared that while the two men each had their own set of legal troubles, they also bore a striking physical similarity to each other.

Both men were arrested and handed over to officials from the Canada Border Services Agency for immigration hearings.
