A charge of attempted murder has been laid against a 22-year-old Victoria man accused of shooting a man in a Langford home on Tuesday.

Tomas Paul Podhora appeared before a justice of the peace by telebail on Wednesday night.

Podhora is charged with attempted murder and possession of a prohibited weapon. He is being held in custody until his next court appearance in Western Communities Court.

Podhora was arrested by Saanich police in an apartment in the 3200-block of Quadra Street at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Tyrone Duberry, who lives in the Quadra Street apartment, said Podhora came to his home Tuesday night “to sleep.” Duberry insists he knew nothing about a shooting.

Duberry said the two woke up Wednesday morning to police bursting in his door with guns drawn. Both were handcuffed and taken to West Shore RCMP detachment.

Duberry, 21, was arrested for being an accessory after the fact but was released later that night without charge.

“I didn’t do [anything], he just came to my house,” Duberry said. Police obtained a search warrant to look for the gun. West Shore RCMP did not say if the gun was recovered.

The 38-year-old victim was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being shot several times about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A spokeswoman for Island Health said she cannot provide an update on the man’s status because his family has asked for privacy.

There is a publication ban on evidence heard at the telebail conference and on the victim’s name.

Police were at the home at 2639 Sooke Rd. for the third day Thursday and it remained behind police tape.

West Shore RCMP have not released details on what they believed led to the shooting.
