Victoria Fire responded to a vehicle fire at an autobody shop in the Burnside area early this morning, after a witness spotted blaze smoke and flames and heard several explosions.

Firefighters arrived at 627 Dunedin St. around 3 a.m. and found two cars fully engulfed, with flames spreading to the adjacent businesses. The cars were in a courtyard behind the business where autoparts and old vehicles were stored.

“Upon arrival, there was heavy black smoke and flames coming from the courtyard,” said deputy fire chief Dan Atkinson. “In the initial 911 calls, there were reports of several explosions.”

The commercial property houses Gurmail Auto Body, Elite Manufacturing Ltd. and Scooter Underground.

Firefighters knocked down the fire within 15 minutes, but then used ladders to go onto the roof and put out any hot spots.

Crews cleared the scene by 7 a.m.

A fire inspector arrived on scene and is still working to determine what caused the blaze.

The fire caused approximately $230,000 worth of damage.
