The office of Liberal candidate Tim Kane, who is running in Saanich-Gulf Islands, was destroyed after a car drove into the Quadra Street building on Friday, Oct. 16, 2015.

A vehicle crashed through the front wall of the office of Liberal candidate Tim Kane on Friday afternoon, causing significant damage to the building.

No one was injured.

Saanich police said a 67-year-old man coming to work as a volunteer on Kane’s campaign accidentally accelerated his vehicle into the front of the campaign office in the 4000 block of Quadra Street, just north of McKenzie Avenue.

“He got hung up on a curb and thought he was on the brake pedal when he was on the gas pedal,” Sgt. John Price said.

No charges are being contemplated.

Kane, who arrived on the scene just minutes after the crash, was trying to find the silver lining in a situation that could set back his campaign: “This is symbolic of the Liberal breakthrough we are having here,” he said.

The campaign planned to move to another location, Kane said, adding it couldn’t have come at a worse time as there’s just days to go before Monday’s vote.

“It costs us half a day or more, and one of the issues is we have 11 phone lines in that office, so we won’t really be able to ramp up in a cohesive way,” he said, noting they will be using cellphones and what landlines they can accommodate at the other location.

“It is a bit of a setback.”
