Vancouver Island is in for a heat wave this week with temperatures expected to soar to 36 C on some parts of the Island.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement to remind people that as a strong ridge of high pressure envelopes B.C., temperatures are rising well above the average for June.

“Temperatures away from the coast will reach the low 30s today and Tuesday, which is about 10 degrees above averages for the middle of June,” the national weather forecaster says.

After initial weeks of cool weather in what some were calling June-uary, the warm weather continues to crank up this week with Environment Canada forecasting Port Alberni will hit 36, Nanaimo 33 and Greater Victoria 29 today.

In Greater Victoria, today’s expected high of 29 will fall to 27 Tuesday and 26 on Wednesday.

“The ridge and very warm air are expected to stick around until Wednesday,” says Environment Canada. “Some cooling will occur on Thursday.”

For those who want to stay cool, Environment Canada says temperatures near the water will be significantly cooler today, for example 22 near the water in Greater Victoria.

The Environment Canada special weather statement includes Greater Victoria, inland Vancouver Island and east Vancouver Island communities Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.
