University of Victoria professor Aaron Devor, a leading transgender studies scholar, has been honoured for his contributions to inclusivity and social change.
Devor, chair in transgender studies at UVic, was awarded the 2017 Equity Award by the Canadian Association of University Teachers this month in Ottawa.
The award, established in 2010, recognizes people who have demonstrated “outstanding commitment to challenging exclusionary behaviours such as racism and homophobia and … made post-secondary education in Canada more inclusive.”
As chair in transgender studies, Devor works with some of the world’s top researchers, scholars, thinkers, activists and students. He is also the founder and academic director of the Transgender Archives at UVic.
A professor in UVic’s department of sociology, Devor is a member of the International Academy of Sex Research, a fellow of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality and a national award-winning teacher. He is also behind the Moving Trans History Forward conference, first held in 2016.
