UVic and Camosun College have received $600,000 to boost the number of spaces for high-tech education by more than 500.

The University of Victoria received $400,000 and is expected to increase the number of spaces for undergraduate students in engineering, computer science and related fields by 500 by 2022-23. Camosun College, which received $200,000, will create 40 new spaces by 2019-20.

The money is part of $4.4 million announced this past week by the provincial Ministry of Advanced, Education, Skills and Training and the Ministry of Jobs, Trade and Technology.

Provincewide, it’s expected the number of spaces for computer and technology-related subjects to increase by 2,900 over the next five years.

In announcing the funding, the provincial government said there are 10,200 businesses in B.C.’s high-tech sector. The No. 1 concern in the industry is continuing access to skilled personnel.
