B.C. Coroners Service has identified the Ladysmith teenager who was hit head-on in a two-vehicle crash on the Nanaimo Parkway on Monday as Zachary Michael Andrews.

The crash occurred about 10:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the Nanaimo Parkway at Mostar Road, said Nanaimo RCMP.

Andrews, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the car. Andrews’ car was hit by a black Suzuki Sidekick, driven by a 35-year-old man from Nanoose Bay, who remains in critical condition.

The Suzuki was southbound on the parkway when it crossed into the northbound lanes, said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Kate Mooney.

The Suzuki collided with a white Mazda RX8, driven Andrews who was in the “correct” northbound lane of the parkway, police said.

A preliminary investigation has not produced any evidence that alcohol was a factor in the Suzuki crossing into oncoming traffic, police said.Police said the driver of the Suzuki was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with head injuries, then airlifted to Victoria General Hospital.

The B.C. Coroners Service and RCMP traffic services continue to investigate the crash and death.
