Two crab fishermen have been rescued after swimming to shore when their vessel sank off Vancouver Island.

The pair had left Elk Bay, north of Campbell River, Sub-Lieutenant Melissa Kia, of Navy public affairs, said Sunday.

They were reported overdue and as a result a maritime-assistance request broadcast was issued out of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

Canadian Coast Guard vessel Cape Palmerston, a search and rescue lifeboat, searched, along with three other vessels that were in the area.

The Cape Palmerston found the two people on shore. When the boat went down, the two swam to shore, Kia said.

They were taken to Campbell River where they were treated for hypothermia.
