Two drivers were taken to hospital after a head-on crash that closed the Malahat for nearly four hours on Tuesday afternoon.

A southbound van crossed into the northbound lane, hitting a five-tonne National Express truck about 11:50 a.m., according to an officer from RCMP South Island Traffic Services. The truck then slammed into the rock face.

The damage to the van was so extensive that firefighters from the Mill Bay and Malahat fire departments had to cut the door off to get to the male driver, who was pinned in the vehicle. No one else was inside.

Both drivers were treated by B.C. Ambulance paramedics. The driver of the van was transported to Victoria General Hospital and the driver of the truck was taken to Cowichan District Hospital. The extent of injuries was not known, but both men are expected to survive.

Mainroad Contracting was called in to clean up a diesel spill caused by a ruptured gas tank in the truck.
