Two men have now been charged in connection with the seizure of a quarter-kilogram of fentanyl — enough of the powerful opioid to kill thousands of people, Victoria police said.

Tristan Keith Gordan Jenkins, 25, and Micah McClure, 38, have been charged with possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The two were arrested Nov. 30 after a weeks-long investigation by police.

On Wednesday, Jenkins applied for bail but was detained by Victoria provincial court Judge Adrian Brooks. The proceedings cannot be reported because the bail hearing was protected by a publication ban.

Jenkins is to appear in court again on Jan. 3.

McClure has not applied for bail, said defence lawyer Chantelle Sutton.

At the time of the arrests, police said the men had gang affiliations and were en route to Victoria after taking a ferry from the Lower Mainland.

Officers seized 250 grams of fentanyl and 100 grams of cocaine. It’s believed the drugs were destined for downtown Victoria.

Fentanyl has been detected in about 83 per cent of illicit-drug overdose deaths in B.C. this year, according to the B.C. Coroners Service.
