The scene at Clover Point early Thursday was Fast and Furious mixed with a little Dumb and Dumber.
Two vehicles, worth a combined $70,000, were driven down an embankment after the two drivers, 20-year-old men from Richmond, decided to race around the Clover Point loop.
A witness driving near the area in James Bay called police about 1 a.m. saying she saw two sports cars — a 2015 Ford Mustang and a 2014 Infiniti Q50 — drive off the end of the cliff, roll down the embankment and land on rocks 15 metres below, said Victoria police spokesman Const. Mike Russell.
It appears the two drivers were speeding around the loop when they failed to make a turn.
“It looks like one tried to brake and one tried to swerve,” Russell said.
If they were going even a couple of kilometres an hour faster, “they could have actually launched off that cliff,” Russell said. “If the tide wasn’t low, they could have ended in the water.
“There’s so many possibilities and none of them end well at all.”
The two men were out of the cars by the time police arrived and were treated by B.C. Ambulance paramedics for cuts and bruises.
A tow truck pulled the cars from the rocks, both of them totalled.
Officers gave both men tickets for driving without due care and attention, which carries a fine of $368.
