Two boaters taken to hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning

The Oak Bay Fire Department is reminding boaters to use carbon monoxide detectors on their vessels after an incident near the marina on Saturday.

The Oak Bay Fire Department is reminding boaters to use carbon monoxide detectors on their vessels after an incident near the marina on Saturday.

“Any time you’ve got an internal-combustion engine or a heating appliance, carbon monoxide detectors … are really important,” said Oak Bay Fire Chief Darren Hughes.

Two people aboard a boat were suffering from the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning when the vessel arrived at Oak Bay Marina about 1 p.m. Saturday. The boat was towed to the dock by a vessel from C-Tow Victoria.

Firefighters and ambulance paramedics were at the marina to meet the boat. The occupants were taken to hospital for treatment. “They were conscious and breathing and talking to us,” Hughes said.
