Times Colonist photographer Lyle Stafford has been nominated for a National Newspaper Award in the news feature photography category for 2012, it was announced today.

The nominated photo is a creative portrait of Liberal leadership hopeful Justin Trudeau.

The Papineau MP and Parliamentary Critic for Youth, Citizenship and Immigration was in town to speak at the University of Victoria on the topic of “Restoring our Democracy.”

This is Stafford’s third NNA nomination.

“This is another example of our commitment to excellence, and to the readers we serve,” said Times Colonist Editor-in-chief Dave Obee.

The 72 finalists in 22 categories were announced in Toronto, with 26 newspapers receiving nominations.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Ottawa at the Canadian War Museum on May 3. Winners will receive cheques for $1,000 and a certificate of award. Runners-up receive citations of merit.
