Times Colonist nominated for citizenship award

The Times Colonist is a finalist in the Victoria version of the 2016 National Philanthropy Awards. The newspaper is joined by Stantec and Maximus B.C. Health Inc. in the Corporate Citizenship category, presented by the University of Victoria.

The Times Colonist is a finalist in the Victoria version of the 2016 National Philanthropy Awards.

The newspaper is joined by Stantec and Maximus B.C. Health Inc. in the Corporate Citizenship category, presented by the University of Victoria. The Times Colonist is being recognized for initiatives such as its Christmas Fund and its book drive in support of literacy projects on Vancouver Island, as well as for helping over 150 charities and community groups annually through in-kind advertising.

Stantec, an engineering, architectural and environmental consulting firm, was nominated for charitable work that includes donating one per cent of annual profits, as well as supporting scholarships.

Among Maximus’s community contributions is the creation of the annual UrbaCity Challenge fundraising race in Victoria.

The philanthropy awards, given annually to individuals and organizations that make a difference across Canada, will be presented Nov. 15 at the Empress Hotel. The event is being organized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Vancouver Island.

Other finalists are:

• Generosity of Spirit Award — Elizabeth (Betty) Kennedy, Marguerite Rowe, Hopkins family and the Team 4 Hope fundraising effort

• Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer Award — Linda Ryder, Gerry McQuade, Robin Farrell

• Outstanding Philanthropic Service Club Award — Zonta Club of Victoria, Saanich Baptist Church, Provincial Employees Community Services Fund

• Youth in Philanthropy Award (ages five to 10) — Andrei Marti, South Park Family School Division 9

• Youth in Philanthropy (ages 11 to 18) — Central Middle School, Grade 9 Stelly’s Secondary student Kaelynn Lindahl, Edward Milne Community School leadership class
