Two men were arrested after three teenagers were robbed Tuesday night on Departure Bay Road in Nanaimo.

Const. Gary O’Brien said two men with their faces covered approached three 14-year-olds around 9 p.m. in the parking lot of a business.

One man, carrying a metal baton, ordered the youths to hand over their belongings. The teens gave the men their backpacks and the men drove off.

One youth called 911 and was able to give police the licence plate number of the fleeing car. Less than an hour later, police stopped the car near Pryde Avenue and arrested two men, said O’Brien.

Police found a metal baton in the car that they believe was used in the robbery.

They also recovered the backpacks and gave them back to the teens.

Zachary Gordon, 19, and Sheldon Grant, 31, are charged with robbery. Gordon is also charged with wearing a mask while committing an indictable offence. He will remain in custody until a court appearance on April 10.

Grant was released and is also scheduled to appear in provincial court that day.
