Cpl. Darren Lagan said a full investigation will be carried out because of injuries sustained by a passenger in the car and the possibility that speed played a role in the crash.

A single-vehicle crash involving teenagers shut down the southbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway this morning, less than 24 hours after another serious crash closed both lanes.

The crash occurred at about 5:30 a.m. and the highway reopened at about 8:15 a.m., according to RCMP spokesman Cpl. Darren Lagan.

The female driver of a VW Golf, carrying two female occupants, lost control of her vehicle and crashed in the 3500 block of the Trans-Canada Highway at an area known as Falcon Heights, near Finlayson Arm, in the West Shore.

The driver and passengers are teenagers, police said

All three teens were injured to varying degrees, police said. The most seriously hurt, a passenger, is not believed to have sustained life threatening injuries.

Police, fire and B.C. Ambulance Service responded.

“Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, though driving pattern — speed — is being examined,” Lagan said.

The roadway was wet at the time, police said.

The southbound lane of the highway was closed after the crash, though officers allowed alternating traffic via the northbound lanes.

The southbound lane reopened just after 8 a.m.

The crash analyst from RCMP Traffic Services arrived on scene just before 7 a.m.

“Given the injuries sustained to the passenger, and the possibility speed played a role, a full investigation is being completed,” Lagan said.

Police said oil and debris were also a concern on the roadway and took time to clean up.
