A threat at a North Saanich high school on Tuesday sent students and staff into a “hold-and-secure” procedure until police determined the building was safe.

The threat was received at 8 a.m., just before classes started at Parkland Secondary School. No details about the threat or how it was delivered were available.

“The police came over immediately and determined it would be best to investigate it actively, even though it was a non-specific threat,” said Keven Elder, Saanich school district superintendent.

Police decided normal activities could resume by late morning.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP are now investigating the source of the threat.

Hold-and-secure procedures are used when there no immediate threat, Elder said, and students and teachers stay where they are. In case of an active threat at the school, there would be a lockdown — lights off, doors locked and people hiding, he said.
