Storm-related activity has knocked out power to thousands of homes in the Gulf Islands and caused flooding in the Central Island.

Mainroad South Island is advising commuters this morning that Cowichan Bay Road is closed due to flooding.

Meanwhile, more than 2,000 customers on both Galiano and Pender and Saturna Islands are without power due to an overnight wind storm.

As of about 7 this morning, 2,300 customers on Galiano Island were without power due to the storm. As of 9 last night, 2,200 were without electricity on Pender and Saturna Islands because a tree fell on Hydro wires in the storm, according to B.C. Hydro.

Another fallen tree across wires in Sooke early this morning deprived about 40 properties of power.

Handfuls of customers are without power in other areas, including Mayne Island and Central Saanich.

Environment Canada says there is a risk of a thunderstorm this morning with the next short break in showers expected Friday. By that night, however, more rain is expected to fall and continue throughout the weekend.
