A 17-year-old boy was attacked and robbed Sunday evening on Holland Avenue, near Helmcken Road in Saanich.
He had just got off a bus about 10:30 p.m. and was listening to music with earphones as he walked home. Three people suddenly set upon him and kicked and punched him while demanding his belongings.
He refused, but one of the attackers managed to grab a bus pass, a cellphone and a music device. The three then ran off toward Helmcken Road.
The victim received minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.
One assailant was described as 19 to 20 years old with brown hair. He was wearing a red baseball cap with the letters “DC” on the front, a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans. The description of the other two was vague, with both having blonde hair and possibly wearing jeans as well.
Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie said it appears as though the victim’s use of earphones might have kept him from detecting trouble earlier. He said care should be taken to ensure that the volume of music does not keep people from being aware of their surroundings.
