A young motorist died and a 35-year-old man suffered massive head injuries Monday on Nanaimo Parkway at Mostar Road.

A teenager is dead after his vehicle was hit head-on in a two-vehicle crash on the Nanaimo Parkway Monday night.

The crash occurred at about 10:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the Nanaimo Parkway at Mostar Road, said Nanaimo RCMP.

A black Suzuki Sidekick, driven by a 35-year-old man from Nanoose Bay, was southbound on the parkway when it crossed over into the northbound lanes, said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Kate Mooney.

The Suzuki collided with a white Mazda RX8, driven by a 19-year-old Nanaimo man in the northbound lanes of the parkway.

The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, said Mooney. Next of kin have been notified.

The driver of the Suzuki was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in critical condition with head injuries, then airlifted to Victoria General Hospital.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. A preliminary investigation has not produced evidence of alcohol as a factor, police said.
