The discovery of a hypodermic needle taped to a parkade handrail has prompted the City of Victoria to increase security checks at its five parkades.

A photo of a needle taped to the underside of a handrail was posted to Facebook over the weekend, with a caption saying that it was discovered at the Bastion Square Parkade. Commenters raised concerns that people using the handrail could have been injured by the needle.

In a statement Monday, the City of Victoria said a security guard found the needle on April 17 at the parkade and a report was filed with police. The needle was removed.

If anyone has information about the Bastion Square Parkade incident, they can contact Victoria police at 250-995-7654, the statement said.

Sam Hollington posted this message on Facebook: HEADS UP PEOPLE!!!! This photo was show to me by the security guard at Yates street parkade. He found it while on patrol underneath the stairs hand rail. Not sure if it was infected with anything or not but just beware that this is happening in our city.
