Two people were arrested and stolen property recovered after a suspicious vehicle caught the attention of a Nanaimo Mountie early Monday.

The officer was parked near an apartment complex on Cypress Avenue — the site of a string of recent break-ins — just before 4 a.m. when he noticed two people sitting in a car, said Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, Nanaimo RCMP spokeswoman.

The Mountie ran the vehicle’s licence plate and realized the car had been reported stolen Dec. 6.

A search of the vehicle uncovered goods, including jewelry and personal items, belonging to a man whose apartment was broken into on Sunday.

The two people in the car were arrested.

A 25-year-old Nanaimo man and a 17-year-old female are facing charges of possession of stolen property. The man was remanded into custody until a court date on Wednesday. The woman was released from custody.

The Nanaimo street crime unit is working to return the property to its rightful owners.
