A 62-year-old man is in custody after the Greater Victoria response team was called out to deal with a man pointing a rifle and threatening people Sunday night.

Victoria police spokesman Bowen Osoko said the incident took place around 9 p.m. at a multi-unit residence in the 200-block of Gorge Road East.

“Initial reports indicated the man threatened to harm others at the residence,” said Osoko. “When officers arrived, the man barricaded himself in a unit.”

The residence was evacuated, traffic in the area was blocked off and the area was cordoned off for safety while negotiators tried to resolve the situation.

Around 1:30 a.m., the man surrendered to police. No one was injured and a firearm was seized at the scene, said Osoko.

Mark Cunningham has been charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
