A motorcyclist who fled from police at a high rate of speed along the Patricia Bay Highway on Tuesday morning was arrested after eventually falling and trying to run away.

The motorcyclist was first seen near the highway and Lands End Road about 11:10 a.m. by an Integrated Road Safety Unit officer who noticed the licence plates had expired.

“He directed the driver of the motorcycle to pull over,” said Central Saanich police Sgt. Mark Haney. “The driver initially indicated he would, then took off southbound down the highway.”

Central Saanich police were contacted and set up vehicles near the highway’s Mount Newton Cross Road intersection.

“The motorcycle came through, manoeuvred through the stopped traffic, past an emergency vehicle with its lights and siren operating, and then took off eastbound along Mount Newton down toward the Tsawout First Nation,” Haney said.

Police followed briefly until the motorcycle continued into the reserve.

The bike was spotted again, at which point the motorcyclist lost control, fell off and started running. He was quickly apprehended and is facing unspecified charges.
