The Sooke Potholes Campground will not open this summer because of financial woes facing The Land Conservancy.

Sooke Potholes Regional Park, on Sooke River Road, which is run by the Capital Regional District, is not affected.

TLC and the CRD agreed in 2004 to buy lands next to the potholes. The CRD operates the park and the TLC has been managing a campground.

But the TLC is under creditor protection because it owes about $7 million. A court-appointed monitor is working with the Victoria-based organization to sell some properties and get it back on a sound financial footing.

The Land Conservancy reduced its staff to seven from 50 in the past two years.

“We have had to reduce our operations provincewide,” said John Shields, TLC’s director of operations, on Friday. “As a result, we are not able to run the campground this year.”
